Crocodile cracking, also known as alligator cracking or fatigue cracking, is a common type of distress in asphalt pavement. It is characterized by interconnecting or interlaced cracking in the asphalt layer resembling the hide of a crocodile. Crocodile cracking is generally a loading failure, but numerous factors can contribute to it including weather, poor drainage, or repeated over- loading. It is important to prevent crocodile cracking, and repair as soon as possible, as advanced cases can be very costly to repair and can lead to formation of potholes or premature pavement failure
Potholes often occur when moisture penetrates through the cracks of the asphalt’s surface. Cold temperatures cause the water to freeze and expand. Dirt and gravel are forced out leaving a hole. As the ice thaws, the stressed asphalt develops into a pothole.
Damaged asphalt is not only unappealing to the eye, but can also result in personal injuries, damage to vehicles, and increased maintenance costs.
Our professionals know the dangers of compromised drains and manholes. To avoid a costly repair and liability issues, they should be monitored. Because of their exposure to outdoor elements, they are susceptible to deterioration. This can lead to pooling water as well as brick and mortar depreciation which support the drain. Once the integrity of mortar and brick surroundings have been compromised, the deterioration will quickly progress as the weight of automobiles add stress. Without immediate attention, these areas can sink suddenly, causing injury to pedestrians or damage to vehicles.
